Lake Grassmere, Marlborough February 2023
Lake Grassmere/Kapara Te Hau in Marlborough is a lagoon, separated from the sea by dunes. It’s not fed by any natural inflow rivers or streams.
NZ has been producing salt here since the 19040’s. Saltwater is pumped into it from the sea where it is sectioned into evaporation ponds, increasing in salinity as the water is moved from pond to pond as it evaporates, creating salt as the end product.
Maori tribes - pre European settlement were drawn to the lake as a food source, waterfowl prevailed.
I’m interested in how the landscape has been modified beyond it’s natural state. Sectioned into ponds, linear divisions when observed from ground level.
