White Basket Fungus, Bottle Lake Forest.
Iliodictyon cibarium. Native to New Zealand and Australia. It resembles a polyhedron shape similar to a “fullerene” - a carbon allotrope that is a closed mesh shaped typology.
Not commonly seen but after a warm wet autumn I found these fungus in varying stages of decay on a walk in the forest. Apparently edible when at immature stage, they soon turn slimy and foul smelling. Maori considered them a delicacy and had many names for them, often referring to “Whaitiri” the atua/goddess of thunder, as these would often appear after thunderstorms.
