Exotic afforestation, Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa). Commonly planted in Canterbury for timber, firewood and shelter for livestock by early European settlers. I grew up with this species on the farm and love sitting under them; the smell, the sound of the wind in them, their shape and texture.
This stand of trees seemed varying in age. Many had fallen, probably due to strong winds. They’ve been left there, in states of decay to become part of the land over time.
